What is organized labor?

A question that I would like to pose, in order to have some idea of the 
direction from which participants view organized labor, is: What is the 
purpose or function of an organized-labor union/organization/entity/body?  I 
think that addressing this question will give us a basis for forming other 
questions and could serve as a guide to overcoming miscommunications.
