Chick -

We are not unaware of the co-op model - most trade unionists interested in employee ownership would prefer it.  The ESOP model, however, provides a mechanism for financing employee ownership and makes it possible in circumstances in which it could not otherwise be accomplished.  We have learned that we can develop a union model that is democratic, that the workers' own and control.  UA was just a massive undertaking, with bad timing, without full union support, without enough time to build a democratic, partcipative infrastructure.
