Paul,

Nothing is simply abolished.  Many would stand to lose from the abolition of 
the current tax system.  Until you show them how they benefit from the change, 
no change will occur.  You need to convince:

Democrats, who have a major stake in speaking for progressivity on behalf of 
their constituents

Industries who receive tax benefits from the current system:

Tax preparers
Home builders
Mortgage lenders
Colleges and Universities
Educational lenders
Municipal governments
Municipal bond traders and financers
The Transportation and Hospitality industries 
Rental Car companies (anyone who benefits from tax benefits for "business 
expenses")

and many, many more...
