Dear EOPrivers
Great discussion! I haven't had a chance to read
everyone's despatches in detail but skimming through there's some great ideas to
digest. Joseph's paper looks like a particularly interesting level of analysis
given its attention to political realities. I look forward to digesting
it.
Some news from down under. Queensland and NSW
State Labor Governments are copping bad press over power industry losses in
their purely government owned power utility companies - estimated to be
A$1.4billion since the onset of the national electricity market two years
ago.
The NSW Treasurer has reignited the debate re
privatisation by announcing an inquiry in to the industry. He is avowedly
pro-privatisation but the Party has hamstrung his efforts to promote that
agenda.
I've discovered recently that my portfolio (Fair
Trading) put out a document in '96 entitled "Employee Buyouts" which
talks about ESOP/Coop structures for employee buyout scenarios. Politically,
this is useful.
I've had a brief chat with Shann about promoting
a CSOP/ESOP model in political circles. I think the times right for that and a
good model could get a sympathetic hearing amongst the Left considering some of
these assets are now beginning to suffer losses.
How's the Ontario Hydro project going
Barry?
Cheers all
Tim Mitchell
