Re: EOnation: The prospects for collective ownership and EO

Well, Louis Kelso himself proposed plenty of individual share ownership
structures which weren't employment-based, and co-op grocery stores and credit
unions provide some similar examples. I don't think there's anything
incompatible between low employment levels and individual share plans. The
issue is to identify categories of stakeholders which are stable enough to
structure the ownership plans around. Residents in a specific community and
patrons of a particular business could both work as target groups for an
ownership program.

Dear friends, Juan Guillermo Espinosa reported at the conference in WDC that
his sources have conluded that collective ownership of enterprises is
preferable to individual employee share ownership in Chile. The reason he
gave: employment varies too much for ownership to rest with individuals. Does
the idea seem practical? Does the reason make sense? Are there other
arguments pro and con? If it is a good idea, are there especially desirable
structures for this that we haven't already discussed in our papers and
exchanges?
